How Does A Disc Herniate Anyway?
Your disc is like a shiny, gelatinous shock absorber between each of your spinal bones. These discs allow some space between your spinal bones so that each bone can move separately and independently of each other. What happens as we go throughout out lives is that the bones in our spine begin to move less and less. (We may even have poor posture). This puts our discs in trouble because they do not have a blood supply. The only way that our discs get any hydration or nutrients is from movement! If movement stops, the flow of nutrients stops, and the discs begin to degenerate. Before you know it, you bend over to "pick up a feather" and your disc has given out.
When a disc "gives out" it means that some of the shiny, jello, bouncy material has squirted outside of itself. This can cause a great deal of pain and dysfunction in the body.

Do Chiropractors Treat Disc Herniations? |
Yes! After doing some orthopedic, neurological, and chiropractic tests, we will know if you have a herniation or not. Depending on your case we may refer out for an MRI to confirm. Best rest assured, these are the types of cases I treat on a regular basis.

When Should I Come In? |
As soon as possible. I know it hurts. It maybe hard to walk, but getting your body healing as soon as the injury occurs gives you the best long term outcomes. Of course I will only treat you once you feel comfortable with the process.

Research Says.. |
“Chiropractic patients were found to be more satisfied with their back care providers after four weeks of treatment than were medical patients. Results from observational studies suggested that back pain patients are more satisfied with chiropractic care than with medical care.” -Hertzman-Miller et al (2002), American Journal of Public Health.

When it is difficult just to walk.."Dr.Krystal is fantastic! I hurt my back and couldn't walk. Within an hour of my injury, Krystal was willing to see me and help relieve my pain. She is patient, kind and listens well. I love that she takes the time to really explain things and walk through next steps with her patients -- you can tell she really cares. I can't say enough good things about Dr. Krystal's approach! |
